Start with scope, not just a price

Customers compare quotes on clarity as much as price. Break the job into line items — labour, materials, call-out, disposal, permits where relevant. A single lump sum invites questions and disputes later.

Describe what is included and what is not. 'Supply and install 6x downlights' is clearer than 'lighting work'. If prep, patching or asbestos checks are excluded, say so in the quote or terms.

Use line items customers understand

Group related work but avoid jargon where possible. Homeowners may not know what 'rough-in' means — a short description helps.

Save common items in your catalogue so repeat jobs are faster. Call-out fees, standard labour rates and common parts should be one tap away.

  • Description plain English where possible
  • Quantity and unit (each, hour, sqm)
  • Unit price and line total
  • Separate labour and materials

Include GST and validity

Australian quotes should show whether amounts are inc or ex GST and the total payable. ProperTradie defaults to AUD and 10% GST for Australian businesses.

Set a quote validity date so customers know pricing does not sit open forever — especially when material costs move.

Attach terms and get written approval

Payment expectations, variation process and warranty wording belong in your terms — not buried in a text message. Snapshot terms onto each quote.

Written approval before work starts reduces 'I thought that was included' conversations. Electronic approval links with SMS verification give you a clear record without paper chasing.
